The Alleged Medical Malpractice of Dr. Bonnema – What Happened
David Drik Bonnema, M.D., is a cardiologist affiliated with Trinity Health Medical Group (formerly Mercy Health Physician Partners) and Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital. He is accused of falsifying echocardiogram results to justify the unnecessary implantation of cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) in patients who did not meet the medical criteria for these devices. ICDs are powerful cardiac devices that function as pacemakers and can deliver life-saving shocks when a life-threatening arrhythmia is detected.
To qualify for an ICD, a patient must have either survived a potentially lethal abnormal heart rhythm or have a significantly weakened heart (ejection fraction of .35 or lower), putting them at risk for sudden cardiac death. However, Dr. Bonnema allegedly engaged in a pattern of underestimating patients’ ejection fraction (EF), misreporting results to show an EF of .35 or less when, in reality, the patients’ heart function was stronger, often at .45 or higher.
Additionally, Dr. Bonnema allegedly manipulated nuclear study data to falsely indicate a need for ICD implantation. These allegations suggest that he knowingly subjected patients to unnecessary surgical procedures, exposing them to serious health risks and the long-term burden of having a device that requires replacement every 8-10 years due to battery depletion.
